As a notion, leadership is about leaders themselves, as well as the rest of the society. It concerns the way leadership figures project themselves to the public, the kind of situations they had to face and any past experiences they have internalised. Leaders’ activity touches upon delicate issues, like fear, insecurity, attitude, motivation and commitment of employees, informal or powerful communication networks (cliques within the workplace), devotion, norms, reward, stress and the race against their own self. Leaders are often haunted by their own ghosts, childhood fears or traumatic incidents. Changes in a leader’s attitude can bewilder their followers, who often make assumptions and draw random conclusions in their attempt to decode their behaviour. However, leader’s attitudes often depend on habits rather than given circumstances. In order to address unique situations, one has to treat them differently from past occurrences. Likewise, leaders’ habits and previous experiences often cause them to act in a way which can harm the organisation and its members.
